Gilles Fontaine (1948-2019) was a Canadian astrophysicist at the Université de Montréal. He has made fundamental and lasting contributions to our knowledge of white dwarf interiors, evolution and pulsations. He was an inspiring teacher and mentor, who has trained a new generation of leaders in the field.
